The Mezzo range of wines is a celebration of South Australia’s hidden gems. Sub-regions located half (MEZZO) way between Melbourne and Adelaide that make world-class wine but have yet to be recognised for doing so.

Robert Hesketh 1992

Hand picking 1991

In 1988 Robert Hesketh and Mark Swann planted the first vines on the terra rossa over limestone soils in the Tatiara District. The soil profile and warm climate make it ideal for growing high quality fruit.

Australia's highest profile wine company liked the fruit so much they eventually bought the vineyard, yet continue to use the wines anonymously in their expensive Bin wines. We believe that this hidden gem deserves better and are proud to release this single vineyard wine wearing is location, history and provenance proudly on its sleeve.

Use of the term MEZZO represents not only the location, but is also a nod to the heritage of the Italian locals who built and managed the original Cuppa Cup vineyard.

Bool Lagoon vintage crew 2001

Erica Kay pruning - 2003

In 1998 Jack and Erica Kay planted the first Cabernet Sauvignon vines on their property at Bool Lagoon.

This is ideal Cabernet country, having classic terra rossa over limestone soils and a cool climate for extended ripening. The quality of their vineyard was enhanced by planting only Reynell selection Cabernet vines – these are ancient root stocks lost to France due to the phylloxera louse in the late 1800s.

The quality of the fruit saw it contracted to high profile wine companies from day one, but they never took the more difficult path of promoting the region. We believe that this hidden gem deserves better and are proud to release this single vineyard wine wearing is location, history and provenance proudly on its sleeve.
